RESEARCH, CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF MONUMENTAL PAINTINGS OF THE KARAKHANID EPOCH (AFRASIAB)
Abstract
The field conservation process, chemical and technological study, restoration and mounting of paintings
of the Karakhanid epoch (12th–13th centuries) on a stationary basis has been described. The painting
was found in the pavilion of the palace of the Karakhanid governor Ibrahim ibn Hussein Osman. The
pavilion was located on the lower platform of the Afrasiab citadel. Numerous fragments of paintings
(more than 800 pieces) chaotically scattered in a heap of completely destroyed pavilion.
Documentation of fragments of a painting on the scheme-cartogram was for the first time made using a
laser theodolite to reconstruct the wall painting. Clearing showed that the part of fragments of paintings
was covered with the second paint layer. Methods for stratification of such two-layer paintings have been
developed. Operations on straightening of a surface of the deformed fragments have been performed.
New compositions of artificial plaster are developed, a mounting of a painting on a modern basis
(aluminum-plastic "sandwich" panels with honeycombed structure) has been carried out. Using Raman
spectroscopy structures of mineral pigments of paints have been defined (lazurite, ochre, cinnabar,
gypsum, carbonaceous components).
In the course of conservation and setting-up of fragments 14 picturesque compositions were reassembled.
The unique paintings have a plot with anthropomorphous and zoomorphous patterns. These are
medallions with birds, run of animals, scenes of a feast and hunting, mythological scenes, epigraphical
compositions, frame pictures with various personages.
