GLAZED CERAMIC VESSELS OF THE JIZZAKH OASIS OF THE 15TH–16TH CENTURIES
Abstract
This article, based on the materials of Kaliyatepa, discusses the types of glazed dishes, technical and
typological features, domestic functions of the late medieval material culture, little studied in the
archeology of the Jizzakh oasis. It should be noted that a number of scientific papers and articles
were created on the basis of available written sources, ethnographic data on the political and socioeconomic
history of the oasis. However, until recently, very few excavations had been carried out in
archaeological sites of the 14th–15th, and 16th centuries; there had been limited attention to the material
culture of that period, not only in the Jizzakh oasis, but also in other regions of the country.
The study of the complex of glazed dishes found in the cultural layers of settlements across the shakhristan
at the site Kaliyatepa located in the city of Jizzakh gave the following results: with reference to their
technical and typological features, glazed vessels were produced by local Jizzakh potters; these dishes
are grouped by their functions: kitchen, dining and special-purpose ceramics; comparative analysis was
carried out based on the general shape, ornamental patterns, paint color, patterns of flower utensils.
On the basis of an extensive comparative analysis, the complexes of Kaliyatepe shahristan date back to
the 15th–16th centuries.
