ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT ON THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE OF THE SOKHA BASIN (BY REMOTE SENSING, FIELD STUDIES AND METHODS OF COLLECTING INFORMATION FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS)
Abstract
Due to the climate and landscape of the Sokh Basin, people began to explore this area since the Stone Age.
In the course of research in this area, many monuments from the Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages have
been discovered. However, due to various factors, the number of such tangible cultural heritage sites has
decreased, and their areas are being under development for various purposes. The construction of irrigation
structures in the valley area in the 1930s, the development of the hills after the 1950s, and the emergence of
other anthropogenic landscapes have had a major impact on the archaeological sites. Irreversible changes to
the landscape that have, in some cases, occurred at the expense of archaeological sites were caused by the
demographic growth in the valley, expansion of settlements, and associated infrastructure.
This study examines the process of anthropogenic impact on monuments located in the Sokh Basin during a
particular time period. It is based on several methods, including comparative analysis of remote sensing data
from different periods, field data, and information collected from local residents. This study also makes it
possible to determine what factors may result from the loss of archaeological sites.
