IRON ARROWHEADS FROM THE AKCHUNGUL BURIAL GROUND

FULL TEXT:

Abstract

The Akchungul burial ground, located in the tract of the same name on the Ustyurt Plateau, was studies in the
1980s by archaeologists from the Karakalpak Branch of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. To date, the
problem of nomadic culture is a gap in the field of archaeology. The long-term practice of archaeological research
shows that burial mounds remains the main monuments of nomadic culture in Uzbekistan. Arrowheads are one
of the mass finds in nomadic burials. Arrowheads made of iron predominate in the quiver set from the Akchungul
burial ground. Iron as an easily corrodible material loses its original shape over time; thus, the classification of
iron arrowheads always requires a special approach from the researcher. This collection of arrowheads from the
Akchungul burial ground in composition belongs to the ancient period. In terms of typological features almost all
of the arrowheads are similar to those from the Sarmatian quivers of the Volga region and Siberia. Typological
analysis allowed the author to date the entire set of quivers to the 2nd–4th centuries A. D.
