SOME ASPECTS OF THE STUDY OF FORTIFICATIONS OF NORTHERN BACTRIA IN THE 4th-2nd CENTURIES B. C.
Abstract
This article provides a description of the system of defensive structures and its features in the 4th–2nd
centuries B. C. As a result of the penetration of Greek culture into Central Asia during the Hellenistic period,
a unique culture, evident in pottery, art, and architecture, as well as in the system of defensive structures is
formed in accordance with the local cultural traditions. A peculiar system of defenses of the existing cities in
Northern Bactria is formed. The article analyzes the features of the defensive walls of the cities and fortresses,
proteichism (additional front wall), and ditches. They were components of the trilinear system of defense
of the North Bactrian cities of the 4th–2nd centuries B. C. In turn, a description of the system of defense of
Northern Bactria is offered separately. Moreover, information about the types of city walls, towers, and moats
of Hellenized Bactria is discussed. The system of defensive constructions includes forts, fortresses, boundary
walls, individual observation towers, and systems of boundary defense. In Northern Bactria, they form two
lines of defense.
