THE STONE WEAPONS FROM KUTURBULAK AND THEIR PRODUCTION USING LEVALLOIS TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
It is known that the Kuturbulak monument was first discovered in 1971 by the Middle-Zarafshan archaeological
team under the leadership of Y.F. Buryakov. The monument was investigated by N.H. Toshkenboyev in 1971-
1972 seasons. The main attention of the expedition was paid to the study of Kuturbulak, as the cultural layers
of Zirabulak were damaged as a result of construction works in historical times. Kuturbulak is located 100
km west of Samarkand, at the foot of the Zirabulak Mountains. Excavations at the monument uncovered 165
m2 of area at the monument. During the period of independence, research was conducted by international
partner expeditions, including those of Uzbekistan-Poland (1994–1995) and Uzbekistan-Russia (2002) at the
Kuturbulak monument. This article focuses on the study of stone artifacts from Kuturbulak, recovered from
the 1970s to the 1990s, based on the Levallois technological method. It is established that all three variants of
the Levallois technique (levallois detachment, sharp and plate) prevailed in the monument. Their quantitative
indicators allow to include Kuturbulak in the Levalloisian facies of the Middle Paleolithic.
